A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 240-241 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
A mobility hub is an interchange where users can access various modes of sustainable transport whilst enjoying placemaking features that contribute to the area and enhance the travel experience. This section first provides a definition of mobility hubs, followed by the objectives of their implementation including environmental and socioeconomic reasons. Practical elements including location selection and components are then covered, comprising determinants such as population characteristics, existing infrastructure, and stakeholder requirements. Due to their novelty, the question of implementation is key and can be broken down into the 4Ps: purpose, place, process, and performance. Finally, the future and challenges faced are discussed.
