Mobility technologies and space reallocation

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 244-245 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The emergence of diverse mobility technologies in urban areas prompts questions about the allocation and governance of urban space. While transitioning from car-centric spaces is welcomed, cities face constraints due to diverse spatio-temporal demands. Understanding space involves recognising its multidimensional aspects, spanning sociocultural meanings, lived experiences, power relations, and exclusions. Future governance interventions must span various spatial and temporal scales, addressing legacy and emerging challenges such as institutional discrepancies and the effectiveness of new policies such as geofencing. Finally, anticipating spatial changes from evolving mobility technologies and including more-than-human actors in governance remains a crucial future task.
