Multimodality

Rumana Sarker

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 246-247 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Multimodality in passenger transport refers to using various transport modes within a specific timeframe to promote sustainable travel and reduce car dependency. Urban mobility culture and life stages shape the shift from unimodal to multimodal transport, with younger individuals and retirees more inclined to adopt multimodality. To mitigate transfer penalties in multimodal travel, integrated services and app-based solutions like Mobility as a Service (MaaS) have evolved, though consumer acceptance remains a challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted travel behaviour towards private vehicles, raising questions about the future of multimodality. Post-pandemic, multimodal services must address health concerns, flexible work patterns, and evolving mobility needs.
