Noise

Abigail L. Bristow and Kirill V. Horoshenkov

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 250-251 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The key sources, definition, measurement and impacts of transportation noise are outlined. Noise mitigation and prevention measures are discussed and the real challenge of achieving further noise reduction in transportation is identified. Emerging sources of noise are identified, e.g. drones, electric vehicles and potential new supersonic aircraft. More positively, soundscape developments to assess sounds subjectively in the presence of contextual factors are mentioned. These will lead us away from a reliance on decibels to predict human response to noise and will assist us in developing spaces that are perceived to be quieter and restorative.
