Omnichannel logistics

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 254-255 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Digitisation in the retail sector has propelled the adoption of omnichannel retail, integrating online and offline channels for a seamless customer journey. Initially a response to e-commerce, omnichannel retail demands an advanced logistics organisation, from browsing to purchasing and potentially returns. Omnichannel logistics consists of physical, financial and information flows, with physical stores serving as the epicenter for operations. Several new retail concepts have emerged in line with the promises and expectations of today's on-demand economy, including click-and-collect and ship-from-store. Yet in terms of sustainability, the associated transportation flows, including those of consumers, have varying implications.
