On-street parking
Rachel Weinberger
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 256-257 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
On-street parking is the use of the public right-of-way for vehicle storage. Since automobiles were first introduced to the urban landscape, the curb has been contested with competing demands for its use: bus and bike lanes, loading zones, and vehicle storage. Recognising that there is no demand for parking per se, parking management, and eventually curb management, have become policy imperatives. While parking shortage was the first diagnosis of the problem, increasingly it is the distribution and diminishment of parking demand that cities prioritise.
