Parcel deliveries
Russell G. Thompson
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 258-259 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The growth of e-commerce accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic has led to massive growth in parcel deliveries and a shift towards home delivery. This entry describes the sustainability challenges of parcel delivery and explores how city logistics schemes such as consolidation centres and parcel lockers, as well as physical internet principles, can be implemented to address them. The potential of crowd-shipping, delivery robots, drones, and trading platforms is described.
