Park-and-ride

Graham Parkhurst

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 260-261 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Park-and-ride (P&R) involves using a private vehicle to reach a collective transport service, leaving the vehicle at a transfer point. Research on P&R focuses on scenario optimisation, outcome evaluation, and policy analysis. Typically, P&R involves private cars and rail-based public transport, but variations in access mode and public transport exist. P&R motivations include providing access to high-quality public transport and intercepting car trips to reduce urban congestion. The rise of sustainable mobility has led to a critical examination of P&R, revealing mixed impacts on car and public transport usage. The development of automated vehicles could replace the need for P&R.
