Abstract: Pedestrians are considered the most vulnerable road user group as they are at high risk of exposure to accidents compared to motorised users. Therefore, provision of safer road environments is essential. As discussed in this entry, pedestrian safety is affected by four main categories including individual (pedestrian) characteristics, vehicle and driver characteristics, road design features, and environmental and land-use factors. They are crucial for future policy-making to ensure a safe road environment for pedestrians and to improve road safety to meet the targets set by the World Bank.
