Pedestrians

Grigorios Fountas and Achille Fonzone

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 268-269 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Walking is essential for human mobility, linking transport, public health, and the built environment. Despite its significance and numerous benefits, pedestrian freedom, accessibility, and safety are often compromised by car-centric urban design. Recently, urban planning concepts have emerged to enhance the role of pedestrians in urban and suburban settings. Promoting walkability through mixed-use spaces and compact urban forms is supported by innovative concepts such as the “15-minute city” and interventions such as pedestrianisation and traffic calming. Future initiatives should actively focus on reallocating urban space to foster walkable and inclusive environments that prioritise pedestrians, especially in urban contexts.
