Persons with reduced mobility

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 270-271 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Persons with reduced mobility (PRM) is a term used to describe people whose access to transport and destinations where activities are accessed is constrained due to a mix of environmental and personal factors. PRM is usually understood to comprise disabled people, older people, people with temporary injuries and parents with young children. Each of these groups faces the challenge of using a transport system that has often not been designed with their needs and capabilities in mind. Consequently, they experience barriers to their free movement and their participation in economy and society, resulting in transport disadvantage and social exclusion.
