Airline deregulation

Kenneth Button

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 30-31 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Globally, airline regulation went through a sea change in the decades after the passing of the 1977 US Air Cargo Deregulation Act and the 1978 Airline Deregulation Act. This contribution outlines the changes that occurred and sets them in the context of the prevailing economic, political, and technical situation of the time. It then considers the implications of the deregulation focusing largely on the US experiences.
