Public transport decarbonisation
Eleanor Short
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 294-295 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Decarbonising public transport is about reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with public transport and reaching net zero to limit the worst effects of climate change. It includes two main dimensions: switching from internal combustion engines (ICEs) to propulsion systems with zero tailpipe emissions referred to as zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) and using renewable energy sources to power these vehicles. The two main technology types for zero emission public transport are battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (HFCEV). Decarbonising public transport has wider benefits for passengers, health and places.
