Abstract:
Public transport interchange plays an essential role in connecting trips for public transport users. A good interchange design extends network effects and improves the efficiency of the public transport system. The cross-platform interchange, for example in Hong Kong's MRT system, is one of the most efficient interchange designs worldwide and one that can minimise waiting and walking time and improve safety. Effective interchanges integrate hardware (e.g., environments and information provision) and software (e.g., timetable coordination). Challenges of interchanges include locational integration, travel generation integration, and service design integration. Besides the general case of interchange, different levels and modes of interchange should be considered in the design stage.
