A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 302-303 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The principles and good practice in network planning, with an emphasis on buses, are considered in this entry. It provides a framework for understanding how good network planning should be objective-driven and how this flows through to a decision as to whether a network should be frequency or coverage orientated. Two methods of network planning are discussed – the tailor-made approach and the ready-made approach, and the benefits of the latter are outlined in terms of network principles. The entry identifies interchange as a prerequisite of the ready-made approach.
