Rail freight

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 308-309 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Rail is considered an efficient ground transport mode to ship large amounts of goods over a long distance. Depending on the type of operation and train makeup, freight is carried by rail in three different train consists (makeups): unit, manifest, and intermodal. Major advancements of rail freight transport have focused on heavy haul rail infrastructure and rolling stock design and the handling of long train operations. There has been an increasing literature that addresses contemporary heavy haul railway issues such as moving block systems, rail/wheel wear assessment, smart track inspection and monitoring, dynamic structure-track-rollingstock responses, and safer rail transport of hazardous materials.
