Rail network planning

Nigel G. Harris

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 310-311 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Rail network planning can refer either to the modelling of passenger demand or trains through a rail system. Passenger network modelling is a variant of conventional multi-modal models, with algorithms applied to the network, rail routes, demand and relevant parameters to understand scheme benefits. It is particularly useful in congested urban areas with alternative routings, and may need to include pedestrian modelling within stations. Traffic modelling is based on the simulations of networks, train characteristics and signalling systems, and is designed to optimise the flow of trains.
