Railway infrastructure
Nathan Darroch
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 320-321 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Railways have an essential role in the socioeconomic state and enhancement of towns, cities, regions, and countries globally. Their reliability, availability, and maintainability must therefore have a high-quality focus. The most obvious aspect of a railway is perhaps the trains, but to enable these to provide efficient services, a wide variety of additional systems are required. This entry introduces some of the less tangible aspects of railway infrastructure that must be considered when planning, designing, and undertaking the management of railway systems.
