Airline noise

Sonia Huderek-Glapska

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 34-35 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Airline noise is recognised among the worst aviation externalities in terms of health effects and number of complaints. The sources of airline noise are multifaceted and can be categorised into three main areas: engine noise, aerodynamic noise, and mechanical noise. The impact of airline noise on communities can be profound, affecting both physical and mental health. Mitigation measures to reduce airline noise can be categorised into operational, technical, and land-use strategies. While significant progress has been made in reducing airline noise, ongoing efforts are needed to address the evolving challenges posed by the growth of the aviation industry.
