A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 322-323 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Real-time passenger information (RTPI) is introduced and its potential benefits discussed in terms of enhancing travel experiences by enabling better choices through timely and accurate updates on the status of public transport services. The limitations that affect the impact of RTPI in practice are outlined, along with other drawbacks. Following the discussion on its impacts, the entry explains how RTPI is generated and disseminated, detailing the technology and processes involved. The contribution concludes with an overview of expected developments in the field.
