A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 324-325 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Regional air services vary by location and by type of operation but, generally speaking, can be characteri s ed by geographic and market demand characteristics. Regional air services connect locations within a region as well as connecting regional locations to a major capital city or provincial airport. The aircraft types vary from short-haul jets to specialist aircraft which are capable of operating from short and unpaved runways. Regional services are also characteri s ed by low and/or seasonal demand and may be supported by some form of public subsidy.
