Regional airlines
Silke J. Forbes
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 326-327 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The term regional airlines typically refers to commercial airlines that operate aircraft of up to 100 seats and fly primarily short and medium-haul routes. These airlines, sometimes also called feeders, often connect smaller airports to each other or major hubs. This entry summarises usage patterns, ownership and contract forms, the impact of regional carriers on airline prices and on emissions, as well as network formation.
