Regional airports
Jolien Pauwels
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 328-329 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Regional airports represent approximately 50% of all airports and 25% of global traffic. They serve less than 10 million workload units (WLUs) on mainly point-to-point and short-to-medium haul flights and can be categorised as leading, small, challenged low-cost, and specialised cargo regional airports. Three out of these four types demonstrate financially unhealthy results, exacerbated by the shift of low-cost airlines to major airports and COVID-19, sometimes causing closures. Besides financial challenges, environmental concerns are increasingly apparent. However, a chicken-and-egg dilemma remains: can operators invest in new infrastructure while facing financial constraints, or do they need these innovations to rejuvenate their financial status?
