Retail deliveries
Leigh Sparks
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 330-331 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Retailers and their shops are intermediaries between producers and consumers. The retail delivery process is the set of tasks required to deliver the product to the customer, mostly via the shop. Retail deliveries require coordination, integration and management. The detailed management of deliveries to retail shops provides benefits to all in the distribution channel. It has grown more complex as retail stores have changed in size, scope and location, as restrictions on shop deliveries have increased and costs have risen. With the rise of internet shopping, retail deliveries now occur not only to the retail shop but also to the customers’ homes.
