Road infrastructure
James Reynolds
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 334-335 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Road infrastructure design and management has historically focused on providing capacity and meeting the access and movement needs of cars, trucks and other vehicles. Vision Zero, Complete Streets, Link and Place, and other new approaches, however, are changing understandings about what road infrastructure is for and how it should operate. Future directions appear likely to further emphasise accommodating all modes and users, eliminating serious injury and fatal crash outcomes, technology and automation, reducing carbon emissions and congestion (including through pricing and other demand management), and how roads can be best used to meet community needs, beyond just those of drivers.
