Airline safety

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 36-37 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Safety is the priority for the global aviation industry. It is achieved through a systematic approach to identifying hazards, quantifying risk and implementing appropriate mitigations. A strong regulatory framework covering the whole aviation system from design to operation has been accompanied by industry-wide sharing of lessons learnt from events. Through a structured Safety Management System, airlines identify hazards through techniques including safety reporting and accident investigation. Following assessment of risk, appropriate mitigations may range from training to technology. The performance of mitigations is then measured through assurance processes ranging from formal audits to the use of safety performance indicators.
