Safety
Mark Beecroft
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 350-351 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Safety has a prominent role in transportation as risk is inherent in all transport systems. Enabling the efficient movement of people and goods has historically been achieved by ever-increasing speeds. As speed increases so does risk. Developments in vehicle safety and associated technologies have seen a shift in emphasis in recent decades from crashworthiness to crash prevention in safety research. There is considerable variation in the safety of different transport modes, with road transport being by far the most dangerous. In recent years, the focus of safety research has expanded from traditional risk through security to resilience and sustainability.
