Security
Mark Beecroft
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 354-355 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Security is an important transport issue because it can influence travel behaviour at all journey stages. Security issues can be separated from safety on the basis of intent (criminal or anti-social) and that they are exclusively man-made. Changes in transport and technology result in a dynamic and evolving landscape for transport-related crime. Technology should not replace people on security grounds, as people remain the most effective source of reassurance for travellers. Aviation has led the way in addressing security issues and provides best practice for land-based modes. Research funding has largely responded to threats and events rather than anticipating them.
