Severance

Paulo Anciaes

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 360-361 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Severance happens when the mobility of pedestrians is limited by the need to cross large transport infrastructure such as roads and railways. This is explained by the risk of crossing the infrastructure or by the delays and effort required to use crossing facilities. Severance leads to travel behaviour adaptations such as the suppression of walking trips, which is associated with reductions in physical activity, social interaction, social capital, self-rated health, and wellbeing. Solutions include adding crossing facilities, reducing traffic levels and speeds, or removing the infrastructure. Assessing severance requires a full understanding of its impacts on the affected individuals.
