Airline scheduling

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 38-39 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Airline scheduling aims to maximise profits by efficiently utilising aircraft and crew resources. Airline seasonal schedules are released in late March and October of each year. Due to the size and complexity of industrial problems, scheduling is solved sequentially. It begins with route planning, fleet assignment, aircraft routing, crew pairing, and crew rostering. There are several major scheduling constraints include uncertain passenger demand, aircraft availability, crewing safety regulations, and operating costs. Integrated models that solving multiple stages simultaneously offer superior solutions, but are computationally challenging. Advanced algorithms are required to solve these models optimally.
