Shared autonomous vehicles

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 362-363 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Advancements in vehicle automation technology together with the transport sector's promotion of shared mobility converge into the concept of shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs). This entry considers the benefits of SAVs and their likely impacts on transport networks and land use. The advantages of these emerging services can be maximised when ridesharing is promoted within SAV services and when SAV services are seamlessly integrated into the public transportation system. Nevertheless, it is imperative to carefully consider their operational aspects and underlying assumptions when evaluating their implementation.
