Shared space

Abdullah Zareh Andaryan

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 364-365 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Throughout transportation history, streets have evolved from pedestrian and horse-drawn carriage routes to car-dominated spaces, leading to pedestrian safety concerns and urban redevelopment. The mid-twentieth century prioritised road infrastructure for congestion, but the woonerf concept from The Netherlands redefined streets as shared spaces, balancing vehicles and pedestrians. This shift emphasises vibrant public spaces, traffic calming, and community engagement. Shared spaces mitigate congestion, boost economic vitality, integrate public and active transport, and promote environmental sustainability. Recent designs prioritise pedestrian needs, support commercial activities, and enhance urban aesthetics, improving quality of life in urban centres, tourist attractions, and community hubs.
