Social dilemmas

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 368-369 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Social dilemmas, also known as collective action problems, occur when too many individuals behave selfishly and do not consider the long-term benefits of the group or a common good (e.g., resources). This problem has been studied in psychology, sociology, economics, and evolutionary and political sciences. It is often studied theoretically or experimentally, applying, i.e., game theory. Social dilemmas are addressed with the co-operation of individuals, which can be spontaneous or moderated by third parties (e.g., governments). Co-operation can be achieved through motivational, strategic, or structural solutions. The latter encompass punishments and rewards, which can be financial or non-financial in nature.
