Spatial proximity

Dominic Stead

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 376-377 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Spatial proximity is a key factor in being able to access activities, services and goods. It is a recurring concept in urban planning and is particularly important for less physically mobile and/or less wealthy members of society, such as the elderly. Recently, the 15-minute city concept has served to re-emphasise the importance of spatial proximity in urban planning. Spatial proximity is a crucial way of increasing urban accessibility, but it is not the only way: the transport system and digital infrastructure also have an important role in shaping urban accessibility.
