Taxi and private hire
Matthew W. Daus
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 388-389 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Taxis and traditional private hire vehicles (PHVs) are integral to urban mobility, yet diverge in market focus and regulatory frameworks. This entry delves into their historical evolution, operational disparities, regulatory landscapes, and future prospects. Taxis, tracing back to seventeenth-century London, initially served luxury clientele but evolved into a ubiquitous service. Conversely, traditional PHVs, including limousines and black cars, targeted niche markets for premium travel. Regulatory disparities influence their operation, with taxis facing stricter oversight. Despite challenges from transportation network companies (TNCs), taxis and PHVs can thrive by embracing technology, niche markets, and partnerships. Adaptation to evolving trends ensures their continued relevance in urban transportation networks.
