Telecommuting/teleworking

Hannah Budnitz

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 390-391 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This entry defines telecommuting as a subset of teleworking practices that reduces or replaces the commute to a designated workplace through the use of information and communication technologies. It then describes the multiple and complex ways that telecommuting has been shown to influence, but not necessarily reduce travel demand. It also briefly describes the many factors and varied approaches that produce these nuanced results. The entry concludes by highlighting how the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated trends in telecommuting and the widespread implications this will have for not only travel demand, but also many aspects of transport and society.
