Tourism

David Timothy Duval

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 394-395 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Tourism is voluntary temporary mobility that involves numerous stakeholders, can be highly competitive and is subject to various socioeconomic variables. Tourism is overseen by numerous stakeholders, including governments, destination marketing organisations, transportation providers, local business offering experiences and UN agencies. Transport is an important component of tourism, but for air transport in particular it can be subject to thin operating margins. Finally, recent negative attention toward tourism has come in the form of overtourism and climate change.
