Traffic control
Yu-Chiun Chiou
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 398-399 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Traffic is generated by the movement of people and goods from one place to another through a specific guideway. Traffic control aims to ensure the movement is safe and efficient by taking certain control measures, where efficiency can be thought of as a measure to maintain certain movement levels at a lower total cost, including the control cost and travel time cost. This entry introduces traffic control for different fields, including road traffic control, rail traffic control, marine traffic control, and air traffic control.
