A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 400-401 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Modern tramways are positioned as a public transport mode neighbouring light rail and busways, the latter understood as a sub-group of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). In this entry the tramway renaissance which began in the 1980s is highlighted and basic system parameters are described. Finally, the reasons why tramways offer considerable flexibility for high quality urban integration are explained.
