Active accessibility
David Vale
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 6-7 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Active accessibility can be defined as the ability to reach relevant opportunities through active travel, such as walking and cycling. Four operational categories of measures can be found in the literature: (i) distance-based measures; (ii) gravity-based or potential measures; (iii) topological or infrastructure-based measures; and (iv) walkability or walk score-type measures. Two scales are relevant for evaluation: First, the scale of the urban infrastructure (mesoscale), which measures active accessibility without considering the condition of the infrastructure. Second, the scale of the infrastructure (micro scale) measures active accessibility considering the characteristics of the infrastructure, that is, the route characteristics.
