Airport ground access

Lucy Budd and Stephen Ison

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 42-43 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Airport ground access describes the landside access and egress of passengers, staff and visitors at airports. The provision of safe, reliable and cost-effective ground access modes underpins airport operations. Historically designed around the private car, airports are increasingly looking to diversify their ground access mix and incorporate a range of rail, active travel and public transport, as well as private vehicles, into their ground access offer. However, passengers, staff and freight have different requirements with respect to ground access which must be considered. The entry concludes with reference to future, potentially disruptive, trends in ground access.
