Transit-oriented developments (TODs)
Anoulack Chanthivong
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 404-405 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Transit-oriented developments (TODs) are mixed-use high-density developments designed to encourage active and public transport use. The literature mainly focuses on impact on travel behaviour, property asset prices, and public health. There is less focus on a user's (residents and non-residents) stated preferences and their willingness to pay. The entry discusses the outcome of impact studies from the development of TODs as well as the barriers to their implementation. It identifies that research findings can influence government policy and regulation and the private sector's investment decision-making framework.
