Transport activism

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 406-407 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Transport activism is a critical part of shaping cities and urban mobility, typically defined as citizen-led bottom-up political acts deployed strategically within public spheres, commonly operating outside of – and in opposition to – formal urban governance systems. Transport activism must be understood within the intrinsically political framings of transport and contexts of uneven power relations, or as a response to failures in policy or governance. Groups mobilise together and deploy diverse tactics (such as protests, coalition building, or prefigurative politics) to reshape political relations, often representing a broader response to prevailing injustices in mobility frameworks (such as automobility).
