Transport planning
Dimitris Potoglou
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 412-413 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Urban transport planning is the process of planning, developing and assessing the impacts of transport systems. Following this definition, this entry provides an overview of urban transport planning which, for over 70 years, has evolved into a theoretically and methodologically robust academic and professional discipline. Transport planning helps to understand and forecast travel demand under a range of behaviour, policy, technology and infrastructure changes within an urban area. The entry concludes by pointing towards the state-of-art in transport planning, which is supported by advanced methods and emerging data sources.
