Travel behaviour change
Elizabeth Ampt
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 422-423 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Travel behaviour change is defined as ‘a change or changes in the activities relating to day-to-day travel including mode, location, time of day or day of week and/or as changes in the person carrying out the activity (i.e. someone else doing it)’. The main target of travel behaviour change is reducing car use. The ways of influencing change are then summarised, clarifying the difference between top down such as infrastructure or supply measures, demand or nudge measures, and bottom-up measures. Starting points for these measures are then described before the importance of both before and after measurement is discussed.
