Travel with dogs

Jennifer L. Kent and Corinne Mulley

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 428-429 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Dog ownership is common in many countries around the world and recent research confirms that dogs generate trips. Some of these are for basic care (such as trips to the vet) and others are simply for companionship (such as trips to a favourite dog park). This entry proposes that travel with dogs is an example of the complexity of modern-day practices requiring transport. It outlines why and how some existing public transport systems fail to accommodate this complexity, demonstrating an urgent need for transport planners and professionals to pay more attention to complexity in planning healthy and sustainable transport systems.
