Urban consolidation centres

Konstantina Katsela and Michael Browne

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 436-437 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Urban consolidation centres (UCCs) and microhubs are emerging solutions to the challenges of urban freight transportation, driven by increasing e-commerce and urbanisation. UCCs centralise inbound freight, consolidate shipments, and optimise last-mile delivery, reducing congestion and emissions. In contrast, microhubs are smaller, localised facilities that enable flexible, sustainable deliveries within neighbourhoods, often utilising low-emission vehicles. Both models enhance delivery efficiency, minimise environmental impact, and foster collaboration among stakeholders. While UCCs provide large-scale solutions, microhubs offer scalability and adaptability in dynamic urban environments. Together, these innovations are shaping the future of sustainable urban logistics.
