Airport ownership
Federico Rotondo
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 46-47 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This contribution intends to clarify the meaning of airport ownership, considering the relationships, and sometimes overlapping, with similar concepts such as airport management and governance. It also explains why and how airport ownership structures have evolved, the influence of external drivers and the changed role of airports in society. Based on the literature, a classification of airport governance structures is provided. It is then pointed out that today, airport ownership consists of a spectrum of hybrid models implying the presence of public and private sectors, and that increased regulation following airport privatisation has produced controversial effects.
