A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 444-445 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Transport-induced vibrations stem from road, rail, or aviation traffic and infrastructure construction, impacting the environment, structures, and potentially health. Vehicle interactions with carrying pavements, track structures, and the underlying ground, as well as air displacement and air-borne transmission are primary sources. Factors like vehicle type, speed, and surface conditions influence vibration magnitude. Environmental impacts include noise, structural damage, and health issues for humans and animals. Assessment involves measuring sources, modelling propagation, and comparing data with standards. Mitigation strategies include using vibration-absorbing materials, structural modifications, buffer zones, and maintenance to reduce/manage vibrations.
