Visual intrusion

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 446-447 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Transport infrastructure can cause visual intrusion to the surrounding environment due to unpleasant contrast in visual characteristics. Assessment guidelines have been developed in many countries. The assessments are mostly objective but also rely on judgement of individual professionals, and have been criticised for inadequate reliability and precision. Meanwhile, much research has used subjective approaches, seeking to understand human perception of visual impacts. However, such research on transport visual intrusion specifically is rare. Mitigation should be considered early and enhancement opportunities explored. There are emerging new transport infrastructure and vehicles that may cause new visual intrusions in the future.
